Orlando, Fla.– UMBC Director of Athletics Dr. Charles Brown has been named a 2012-13 Division I-AAA Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year (ADOY) Award recipient by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).

Dr. Brown will be honored at the 2013 NACDA & Affiliates Convention Week, June 10-15 at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando, Fla.  The ADOY award winners will be honored at the James J. Corbett Awards Luncheon on Saturday, June 15.

The Under Armour AD of the Year Award program was created to honor intercollegiate directors of athletics for their commitment and administrative excellence within a campus and/or college community environment. The award spans seven divisions (NCAA FBS, FCS, Division I-AAA, II, III, NAIA/Other Four-Year Institutions and Junior/Community Colleges) and annually honors 28 athletics directors (four from each division). AD of the Year Award recipients will receive their awards at the annual NACDA Convention.

After completing a 24-year tenure at UMBC, Dr. Charles Brown will retire as director of athletics at the end of the month.

Over the past 15 years, UMBC teams have won 46 conference championships and made 29 appearances in NCAA Championship competition. From 1998-2003, UMBC was named the top overall program in the Northeast Conference, and it has consistently ranked as a top-four program in the America East Conference, since joining in 2003. Under his leadership, the Retriever Activities Center was redeveloped and the outdoor aquatic complex, Retriever Soccer Park and a national-class track and field complex were constructed.

Brown has also worked tirelessly to promote healthfulness and spirit throughout the UMBC community, helping to create the UMBC Alma Mater and encouraging activity in the local community, being recognized by the NCAA for its commitment to service. While growing the Retriever program, Brown has also worked to raise UMBC’s profile regionally and nationally, serving two terms as president of the Maryland Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and one term on the NCAA Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet.

Brown will join UMBC’s Division of Professional Studies, where he will work with others to explore the feasibility of an undergraduate concentration or track in Sports Management.

NACDA, now in its 48th year, is the professional and educational association for more than 6,500 college athletics administrators at more than 1,600 institutions throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. More than 2,200 athletics administrators annually attend the NACDA Convention. Additionally, NACDA administers 13 professional associations, including six for the separate business units that report directly to the athletics directors.
